Chapter Nineteen

‘Stupid cow, you,’ Frankie admonished herself as she drove away from the Gables, thinking of her fruitless trip to the library for her CV. ‘Haven’t you got enough to think about?’ None of the dozy staff in Sleepy Hollow had had a clue as to its whereabouts, so now her personal stuff was up for grabs. Great. She’d even written her client’s ex-directory phone number beneath the address. She wondered if that tasty guy in the black-leather jacket who’d helped her out had seen anyone use the machine after she’d gone, but the chances of finding him again were remote.

The visit to town hadn’t been a total waste of time. Before shopping at Waitrose for Evelyn Scott, she’d calmed herself down by buying a natty pink suede rucksack and also used the library’s PC to search for any information on Scott’s Rifles and the family’s history. In the late sixties, she’d found, Evelyn had taken over the business from her parents after completing an engineering degree at Brunel University. She’d married Samuel Colby in 1974, who’d died from a stroke in November 1996. However, apart from details of various rifle-design developments and the factory’s expansion, there was precious little of real interest. Certainly nothing about a child. Nothing about any Jenny either. As for the company’s website, it was a dreary affair of end-of-year statistics and global outlets. It showed that Evelyn Scott must own millions. And she’d still been ever so grateful for that little favour with the shopping.

Yes, she’d made a hit with her, all right. She had even given her a five-pound tip. Stood outside her porch as she’d driven away; a small hunched figure waving after her for longer than necessary. And then as her car had reached the main road, who should have been swerving on to the drive and nearly colliding with her? Evil Eyes himself, wrenching his wheel to avoid a collision. Fixing her with a look of pure fury.

As she drove back at speed, with Ellie’s empty car seat rocking backwards and forwards, she realized she’d have some explaining to do at her next inevitable interrogation. Fresh anger made her speed even faster along narrowing roads.

After a late tea of scones and jam watching the six o’clock news with Merle squeezed into a childhood ballerina’s outfit, Frankie made the call to Tonbridge.

‘What if he docks my pay, or doesn’t hand it over?’

‘Mr Brownlow would never do that. He’d have to give us a very good reason why.’

And then a question that had been bugging her since leaving Briarfield.

‘By the way, do I have to use the word “client”?’

‘Yes. It’s one of our most important rules.’

‘Where did you go to just now?’ Merle whined when Frankie reappeared to turn the volume down.

‘Just up to my room.’

‘No, I mean before that. You were gone for over an hour.’

Frankie gave the V sign to the back of her head. At least she’d had an answer ready.

‘I had to get some stuff for myself from the corner shop.
